Stethoscope Care and Maintenance

ADC stethoscopes are some of the most rugged and durable pieces of medical equipment you will ever own. With proper care and maintenance, you will experience a lifetime of excellent audio quality and performance from your ADC product.

To get the most from your stethoscope, remember:

  • If contamination is a concern, your stethoscope can be wiped down with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution for low level disinfection.

Extreme temperatures can damage your stethoscope and, with time, cause issues with the tubing. Avoid leaving your scope in extreme heat or cold for extended periods of time, or exposing them to solvents or oils that might damage the tubing and chestpiece.

  • Sunlight can be damaging to the tubing, retaining rings, and diaphragms on your stethoscope. We recommend that you do not store your scope in a place where it will be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
  • If your stethoscope becomes dirty, you can wipe it down with mild soapy water. Be sure to dry it thoroughly after cleaning. If contamination is a concern, clean your stethoscope with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution for low-level disinfection.
  • The eartips on your stethoscope can be removed from the binaurals. This will allow you to perform a thorough cleaning.
  • To ensure that your stethoscope remains comfortable, periodically check to ensure that the eartips are tightly secured to the binaurals.
  • Avoid immersing your stethoscope in liquids or subjecting it to steam sterilization. This may damage parts of the scope or allow debris to enter the tubing, which can reduce audio quality.
  • If sterilization is necessary, low temperature gas sterilization is the only method that can be used that will not damage your stethoscope. Refer to the instructions for use provided by the sterilization equipment manufacturer for details on how to perform this type of sterilization.
