Odds are high that everyone reading today’s blog knows October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It’s been a cause worthy of attention since its inception in 1985. But there’s a different awareness event that traces its roots a full 40 years earlier, to 1945, when Congress enacted a law that has since become known as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

If you’ve been on ADC’s Facebook page in the past few weeks you know how committed we are to supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month. It’s an important cause and we’re proud to contribute. But there’s a second outstanding cause celebrated in October – one that’s far less well known but just as important: National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month.

There’s never a wrong time to prioritize health, but Men’s Health Week offers a perfect opportunity to focus on prevention and education. New data from CDC show a slight rise in death rates in the U.S., the first increase in years. For men, heart disease remains the top cause of death, with high blood pressure (also called hypertension) a major risk factor.

Thanks to the American Cancer Society and dramatic improvements in cancer research, treatment, and early detection, millions of women are surviving breast cancer today. But that research takes money. July 26 marks the silver anniversary of the ADA, designed to ensure equal access, accommodation, and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. While we’re not a huge fan of regulation, as it often leads to over-regulation, we do believe it is a moral imperative to remove physical or other barriers to those with disabilities, in work and in life.

With a quarter of a million new cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. alone, it is likely we are all touched in one way or another by this terrible disease.
